[Results of a dynamic study on the status of health and nutrition of a Siberian vegan settlement].

In 1996 for the first time a study of state of health, living conditions and nutrition status of 84 persons from the Siberian settlement of the rigorous vegetarians--vegans and 26 aboriginal inhabitants who feed on a traditional mixed diet was carried out. The clinical and laboratory investigations are kept. The positive influencing vegan ration on a serum lipids, body weight, state of cardiovascular system was showed. The contents of vitamin B12 and serum iron in vegans was in normal physiological range. The level of blood calcium was reduced in comparison with control.

Apparent copper absorption from a vegetarian diet.

BACKGROUND:Vegetarian diets often contain more copper than do nonvegetarian diets, but observations of decreased plasma copper associated with vegetarian diets suggest that these diets have lower copper bioavailability than do nonvegetarian diets. OBJECTIVE:Our objective was to determine apparent copper absorption from controlled lactoovovegetarian and nonvegetarian diets. DESIGN:Eighteen women aged 20-43 y consumed lactoovovegetarian and nonvegetarian weighed diets for 8 wk each in a randomized, crossover design.

Effect of vegetarian diet on homocysteine levels.

OBJECTIVE:To compare fasting total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) levels in vegans, lacto-ovovegetarians and control subjects, and to evaluate the relationships between tHcy levels and nutritional variables in vegetarians. METHODS:The study was conducted on 45 vegetarian subjects: 31 vegans (19 males, 12 females, mean age 45.8 +/- 15.8 years); 14 lacto-ovovegetarians (6 males, 8 females, mean age 48.5 +/- 14.5 years), and 29 control subjects (19 males, 10 females, mean age 43.4 +/- 16.7 years). tHcy was evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography.

Independent effect of vitamin B12 deficiency on hematological status in older Chinese vegetarian women.

We have examined the independent effect of vitamin B(12) deficiency on hematological indices in older Chinese vegetarian women using a cross-sectional study design: 119 women older than 55 years who had been vegetarian for more than 3 years were studied. Fasting blood samples were taken for complete blood count, serum iron, total serum iron binding capacity, serum iron saturation, serum vitamin B(12), serum folate, serum methylmalonic acid levels (MMA), and renal function test.

Dietary intakes and nutrient status of vegetarian preschool children from a British national survey.

BACKGROUND:Dietary intakes and nutrient status were compared in meat-eaters and non-meat-eaters from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey of children aged 1.5-4.5 years. METHODS:Children (n = 1351) were categorized as 'omnivores' or 'vegetarians', according to whether they consumed meat or meat products during a 4-day dietary record. Blood samples were also obtained for analysis of haematological and biochemical nutrient status. RESULTS:Three per cent of children were 'vegetarian'.

Vegetarian lifestyle and monitoring of vitamin B-12 status.

Vegetarians are at risk to develop deficiencies of some essential nutrients, especially vitamin B-12 (cobalamin). Cobalamin occurs in substantial amounts only in foods derived from animals and is essential for one-carbon metabolism and cell division. Low nutritional intake of vitamin B-12 may lead to negative balance and, finally, to functional deficiency when tissue stores of vitamin B-12 are depleted. Early diagnosis of vitamin B-12 deficiency seems to be useful because irreversible neurological damages may be prevented by cobalamin substitution.

Dietary intakes and lifestyle factors of a vegan population in Germany: results from the German Vegan Study.

OBJECTIVE:Evaluation of dietary intakes and lifestyle factors of German vegans. DESIGN:Cross-sectional study. SETTINGS:Germany. SUBJECTS:Subjects were recruited through journal advertisements. Of 868 volunteers, only 154 participated in all study segments (pre- and main questionnaire, two 9-day food frequency questionnaires, blood sampling) and fulfilled the following study criteria: vegan dietary intake at least 1 year prior to study start, minimum age of 18 y, no pregnancy or childbirth during the last 12 months. INTERVENTIONS:No interventions.
